An American in Paris

American In Paris

So what does it take for a Yank to pack up their bags and hop on a plane and move to France? Not much in my case. I'm not sure if it was the bread, the wine, the weather. Whatever it was that made the final decision for me, I'm here! And I absolutely love it.

Growing up in the U.S. we're taught (not officially) to dislike the French. I never understood why. We think their food is wonderful, their women are beautiful, their men are great lovers, and their language is "sexy". Perhaps it has something to do with the war? Another thing that was drilled into us was to not ask too many questions. Just train to get a job, get married, and everything will be fine. Maybe that's part of growing up in a smaller city.

Even more recently there was quite a bit of hatred directed towards the French due to their stance in the war. And they were right all along! Much to my surprise, Michael Moore's film "Sicko" was VERY pro-French. I always took him to be a home-grown super patriot (albeit one who thinks for himself). That was surprising to me.

All that thinking aside, I felt the need to get away from the over-consumption and general decline of American culture. I wanted to see more while they ate big food and numbed themselves to reality television. I was going on a mission!

I find myself in Paris now after almost 10 years without the slightest bit of home sickness. Sure, the French have their own reality TV. And they're not all thin and beautiful. But this is where I fit in.

I'd could go on for a while but the sun is shining and I can hear a baguette calling my name. I'll have a cup of coffee and maybe stroll down to the Seine. All computer-ing, no fun makes one a dull boy.
