Flash Intro Pages are Evil
Background I am a freelance web designer, and I'm often asked to add a short animated intro to client's websites in the form of a Flash movie. If you've been on the internet for more than 5 years then you know what I'm talking about. The web - which is what we called it back then ;) - was full of them. Spinning abstract shapes, twirling and morphing to the sounds of contemporary jazz, ending in a enormous WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE!! Luckily these abominations are now going the way of the dodo. Relegated to certain free news websites in the form of a full page ad. They force you to at least glance at the thing before you can read their wonderful story. Thank the usability genius who came up with the "skip this" link! My Problem Anyhow, I have a client who refuses, absolutely refuses to let me remove the cutesy little 30 second animated splash screen. I've shown her the bounce rate stats. (hint, people tend to run away at the sight of loud flashing annoying things) I've even done a week long surreptitious A/B test with unsurprising results. More people stayed on the site. But no luck changing her mind. I have, however, convinced her to allow me to place a "skip intro" link under the thing. That's a small improvement. This flash movie was made before it was common to code those directly into the animation. Every time I ask - and I ask often - to remove the animation, the response I get is "We've had it since the beginning of the company. It would be like firing my best friend." My Solution I need a different tactic. I'm going to try the real-world analogy approach. This should do nicely. I'll simply ask: "If your website was a real store, and your best friend stood out front wearing a leisure suit blocking the door doing the macarena and singing a song for 30 seconds to every customer who tried to enter, and the only way for them to enter your store was to kick him in the shin, would you say something to your friend?" I have a feeling the days are numbered for that little bugger... |

Fortunately I don't have any friends that can do the Macarena or wear leisure suits but if I did the shins wouldn't be my target of choice. Great article. The only thing worse is people who want the whole website to be flash.
