Yamaha P90 Thumping Drives me Crazy

By John Pash

Yamaha P90 Thumping Noise
I'm the proud owner of a nifty piece of electronic kit from Yamaha known as the P90. It's a full-size digital keyboard. It has all 88 keys, and they have tiny little springs or weights or something in them so when you press a low key, it is has more resistance than a high one.

The playing experience is great. Especially since I live in a tiny little Parisian flat that has such narrow stairs, it's difficult to bring the groceries home. So forget about hauling a real live piano up here to the 6th floor.

I have a bag for it, but it's hardly something you can carry around town and play at the park. For one, there wouldn't be anywhere to plug it in. But I'm getting off topic here...

Problem
The only thing that disappoints me about my 2nd biggest investment (next to my luvery MacBook Pro) is this thumping noise every time to press a key! I didn't hear it at the shop. But this place is stone dead silent, and it is REALLY loud.

Basically, the entire thing is made from moulded plastic. Wirey bits on the inside. A few screws, a bit o glue, and bob's your auntie. Insta-piano. But as some famous guy said way back in school (what's his name?) "Every action required an equal and opposite reaction". So...you press down on the front of the key, and the back of the key jumps up and hits into something or other. Actually, this is more of a leverage thing, than opposing forces, but I have a bad relationship with my delete key. Onwards and upwards!

But I digress...

This thumping of the "key bums", as I like to call them, is happening in an enclosed plastic chamber which amplifies the sound. I feel sorry for my neighbors when I wake up at 3am NEEDING to play a bit of Rachmaninoff's Prelude Op. 23 No. 5

Solution
So what's a person to do? I could A) return the thing. But it's going on 3 years old now. I don't think the store even exists anymore. I could B) sell it on to some poor chap who lives in a noisy neighborhood who won't notice the bump. or I could continue to do what I've been doing. And that is C) plug the thing into my Mac and pop my Sennheiser HD 280 headphones on and get lost in a Chopin Nocturne.

Come to think of it. That's just what I'm going to do!
